You can record the animation and transition effects before you convert the presentation into a video or you can record the narrations and annotations while delivering the presentation and then convert it to a video. The advantage of converting your presentation to a video is that users with whom you share the presentation need not have PowerPoint 2010 installed on their system.

Here’s How You Do It

1. Open the presentation that you want to broadcast.

2. Select the File tab and choose the Share option.

3. In the Share pane, select Create a Video.

4. In the Create a Video pane, select an option.

a) Set the video quality.

· The Computer & HD Displays option allows you to create a high quality video with a large file size for viewing on a computer, projector, or HD display.

· The Internet & DVD option allows you to create a video with a moderate file size of medium quality. You can select this option to burn the video to a DVD or to upload to the web.

· The Portable Devices option allows you to create a low quality video to for display in portable devices.

b) Select an option to play the narration and timing.

· Select the Use Recorded Timings and Narrations to create a video which includes narration and timing.

  • If you have not included the narration and timing in a presentation, click the Record Timings and Narrations option.
  • Click Preview Timings and Narrations to preview the settings applied.

· Select the Don’t Use Recorded Timings and Narrations to create a video without narration and timing.

c) If necessary, in the Seconds to spend on each slide, spin box, set the display time for each slide.

5. In the Create a Video pane, click the Create a Video button.

6. The Save As dialog box opens. In the dialog box, enter a file name and click Save to save the file in the Windows Media Video format. (that is with a .wmv file extension.) You can also save it in other file formats such as AVI or MOV but you will need a third party application for this purpose.

7. Observe that the conversion is in progress. This may take a few minutes depending on the size and quality settings of the video.

8. Navigate to the location where you saved the file and double-click to play the video.

  1. You can also play videos embedded in the presentation.

You need to have a Windows Live ID account to broadcast and view the presentation.

Here’s How You Do It

1. Open the presentation that you want to broadcast.

2. Select the File tab and choose the Share option.

3. In the Share pane, select Broadcast Slide Show. Notice that the right pane displays the Broadcast Slide Show button.

4. Click the Broadcast Slide Show button. The Broadcast Slide Show dialog box opens up.

5. Click the Start Broadcast button.

6. If you are operating PowerPoint 2010 on Windows XP, you may have to login using the .NET Passport wizard, the first time. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, these steps may vary.

a. On the .NET Passport wizard, click Next.

b. On the Do you have an e-mail address page, click Next.

c. On the Have you already signed up page, select an option and click Next.

d. On the Sign up with Windows Live ID page, click Next.

e. On the Sign in with my Windows Live ID page, enter the Windows ID credentials and click Next.

f. On the You’re done page, click Finish.

7. A link to the presentation is now created. You can copy the link and send it to the audience via email.

8. Click the Start Slide Show button to start broadcasting the presentation.

9. End the broadcast

  • Click the End Broadcast button in the Message bar;
  • Or, on the Ribbon, on the Broadcast tab, in the Broadcast group, click End Broadcast.

10. In the Microsoft PowerPoint message box, click End Broadcast to confirm that remote viewers will be disconnected from the slide show.

Additional Notes

  1. All screenshots and steps in this activity are performed using PowerPoint 2010 (Beta).
  2. If you are using a new font, one that is not available by default in the application, you can embed the font that is used in the presentation so that users who do not have the font installed on their systems can still view the broadcast slide show.
  3. Broadcasting videos using PowerPoint is yet to become a reality.
  4. It is preferable to broadcast videos up to 20 MB in size to ensure that there are no glitches in the broadcast.

 Today, we have reviewed real time web start-up, Sency. 

Sency offers  both a search for users and feeds for webmasters. The search allows users to see what is going on right now.  Comments from the real time web are displayed based on recency.  A spam filter has been implemented in an effort to weed out some of the spam.  And, to the right of the search, in the header, you will see a link for today’s most popular links.  This functionality allows you to see the most popular links for a given keyword from today.  So, if you search for fishing, you can see which links have been shared the most by the people with the most authority today, on the real time web.  Unlike a search from a traditional search engine, results from sites such as Sency change by the minute, offering new information and a unique experience each time. 

Sency has also built two widgets for other websites and blogs to publish.  The first widget offers content for websites.  (http://sency.com/feed.php) The great thing about this widget is that it is completely private labeled so that it flows well with a website.  There are also several customization options allowing websites to control keyword, width and height, color, as well as whether or not to display the source.  The other widget allows any website or blog to display today’s most popular links for a given keyword. (http://sency.com/linksfeed.php) So, a blog about cooking can display a list of today’s top cooking links.  The links automatically update each day allowing a website to have fresh links on their site each day.

All and all, it is interesting to see several new startups on the web.  At, websites like Sency are betting that the real time web is here to stay.
